HANOI Vietnam this week sentenced a Thai woman and a Nigerian man to death for transporting drugs into the country, where drug trafficking is on the rise.
Chaimongkol Suracha, 31, was convicted of 鈥渋llegally transporting narcotics鈥?by the People鈥檚 Court of Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Public Security Ministry. Chaimongkol was arrested at the city鈥檚 airport last October, allegedly carrying nearly two kilograms of cocaine in her luggage on a flight from Brazil. She claimed to not know photos albums she was transporting for someone were filled with cocaine.
Vietnam鈥檚 drug laws are among the toughest in the world. According to its penal code, anyone convicted of trafficking, illegally producing or transporting 100 grams or more of heroin or cocaine can be sentenced to death.
Chaimongkol told the court that she had been asked by some African people in Brazil to bring two photo albums to the owner of a car trading company in Vietnam where she was looking for a job, not realizing the albums contained the heroin, according to state media reports.
The court on Monday handed a death sentence to a 31-year-old Nigerian man, who was found guilty of bringing 3.48 kilograms of methamphetamine into Vietnam on a flight from Qatar in June of last year. State media cited the court鈥檚 indictment as saying that Ejiogu Benjamin Ikechukwu had hidden the methamphetamine in 16 metal cylinders and in a laptop charger.
Ejiogu said at the trial he didn鈥檛 know the drug was in his luggage, reported Hanoi Moi online newspaper.

The price of oil moved up to $107 a barrel Tuesday as investors waited for the next U.S. report on crude and fuel inventories for confirmation that demand is increasing.
By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for August delivery was up 69 cents at $107.01 a barrel in electronic trading on the . The contract gained 37 cents to settle at $106.32 on Monday.
Oil is up about 10 percent so far this month. It has been jolted higher by unexpectedly sharp drops in U.S. crude and gasoline inventories, which suggest stronger demand.
